ACTIVITIES and EVENTS

Sat 6/15, 7:00am, Island Tour and Ferry Ride at Sapelo Island, GA:  We will meet at Hardees on Merrill Road (off 295). Come earlier if you are having breakfast.  We will take a ferry boat to Sapelo Island in Meridian, Georgia near Cumberland Island.   The cost of the Ferry is $15.00.   The fee for the ferry also includes a bus tour of the Island which is approximately 3 hours.   After the Island tour, we will hike the trails at the visitors center and grab some lunch.  There are many historical sites on the Island. Sapelo Island is the site of the first believed European settlement in the 1500's.   It is the site to several mansions, one being the Reynolds mansion, home to tobacco tycoon R.J.Reynolds.  It is still home to the Gullah who are African slave descendants who still live on the island. Most of the island is a wildlife refuge and marine and eco system research. To make reservations please call 1-912-437-3224.  You must do the bus tour on island in order to get on the ferry.  The reservations are all done individually so we are not listed under a specific name.   There is a limit of 16 on this trip.  We are departing on the 9:00am ferry.  Call soon to make your reservation as the ferry sells out fast. Please bring snacks, bug spray, and water.   Leader, Victor C.  517-2321

Sun 6/30, 10:00am, Skeet Shooting at Amelia Island Shot Gun SportsIt's time for something entirely new - again. Here's your opportunity to shoot things and destroy them, old-time Florida style. We'll be assembling at the Amelia Island Shot Gun Sports Club, 86300 Hot Shot Trl, Yulee, FL 32097, for a late morning skeet shoot. A "round" of skeet consists of 50 shots (rounds) at clay pigeons.  The course consists of 5 stations positioned along a mile semi-circle.   Think of it as “skeet golf.  The fine folks at Amelia Island Shot Gun Sports will supply everything we need for a safe and fun event. All you need bring is sunscreen, bug spray and a comfortable pair of sunglasses or safety glasses (eye protection is required). For those of you without eye protection, the club will have a few pair of safety glasses we can borrow. Based on a turnout of 21 Sidetrackers the cost is $25 per person. If we have fewer members attend we'll adjust the per person cost upward pro-rata. The event should take about two hours so we should be good and hungry for lunch afterward. http://www.ameliashotgunsports.com.  We'll meet in front of Ross' at the River City Market Place (by JIA) Sunday morning at 9:15 to arrange a carpool to the Gun Club. After a fun morning of armed destruction, we'll have lunch at Pepper's Mexican Bistro  http://peppersmexican.com/menus/fernandina-beach  on Centre Street in Fernandina ("On the island" as locals say). They have good food at moderate prices as well as a full bar and lots of TVs with the game on. Leader: Owen M. 904-708-9633(cell). ADDENDUM:   We're limiting this to 21 attendees.  However, we encourage you to join a waiting list if you want to go.   We can work with the Amelia Shot Gun Sports club to accommodate more people if we have more interested in attending.

Fri-Sun, 7/19-21, 6:00pm Kayaking and Scalloping on the Steinhatchee River: Good news. Even though July has been booked solid at this point, we were fortunate to learn that two boats became available. What’s even better is that Mike and Susan, who last year showed us such gracious hospitality, are offering lodging in their home on the river and in a new house they recently purchased located just down the street. Snorkeling for scallops is fun and easy. You hardly need to dip your head below water to pick them up from the grass in 4’ to 5’ of water. After cleaning them when we get back, the five gallon limit is usually enough for a good meal. One of the local restaurants will cook them for us. They don’t get any fresher than that. Bring your own kayak or rent one for the trip down the Steinhatchee River.

Check out www.steinhatchee.com for general information about the area, scalloping, pictures, videos and a river cam. If you use “Paypal” send as to a friend or mail a check for $85.00 to Dan. Email me if you need a mailing address. Payment is due within one week after your reservation is made. If you need to cancel, please do so as soon as possible in order to allow others the opportunity to go. Total cost is about $137.00 plus your food, drink and gas.

We will leave McDonalds at 454 Cassat Ave. 32205 at 6:15 for the 2:30 drive to Steinhatchee and stop in Live Oak for dinner at a great Bar-B-Q place.

Payment must be received by Sat. TBD or you will be removed from the RSVP list
